Time-series data are usually revealed to us in real time, progressively and element-by-element. A key challenge we face is to infer, from the available data, what future values might be. We analyse time-series datasets to separate out three particular component parts; random variations (noise), short-term variations and general trends. To a casual observer, these can be almost indistinguishable. We seek to identify the underlying drivers for the time-dependent behaviour we observe, with particular focus on drivers for the creation of the general trends and, to a lesser extent, the short-term variations. Identifying the underlying drivers, modelling their cause-and-effect relationships and seeking to verify that the variations are actually produced by the mechanisms we have identified are important activities in system dynamics modelling. An early phase in building an understanding of what drives the creation of the data involves analysing the data taking least notice of random variations or noise, whilst distinguishing short-term variations and general trends. The tool demonstrated here can assist in that early phase. This simulator demonstrates the calculating of a 'moving average' based on a subset whose size is selected by the player. The size of the subset chosen dictates the extent and timing of the response to variations in the raw data. Large subsets produce relatively small responses and responses are relatively slow: they are useful in revealing the nature of general trends. Small subsets produce relatively large responses to variations in the raw data and are relatively quick to produce their responses. As the simulation proceeds timestep-by-timestep new subsets are created and the 'moving average' is calculated: older data element(s) are deleted and replaced by the most recent data element(s). This module can be adapted for incorporation into models which might be used to investigate supply chain dynamics, the behaviour of markets, or alternate re-stocking strategies in response to variations in customer demands, for example.
